Abilities: In the world of Soul Eater, thousands of years prior to the current storyline, a witch used her magical abilities to combine the shape shifting abilities of witches with a human and an inanimate weapon to create the demon weapon. The special abilities born from this witch’s experiment was carried on through generations by DNA so that in present day there are many humans with the ability to turn into an inanimate weapon, more powerful than an ordinary one.
Soul is a scythe-type weapon; he can turn his entire body into a scythe or parts of his body into the blade part of a scythe. Recently, he has also become a death scythe, giving him more advanced abilities compared to the usual weapon. He is now capable of altering the appearance of his weapon form when he resonates his soul wavelength with Maka’s. For example, because of Maka’s grigori type of soul (meaning her soul has angelic wings and is very pure), together they were able to alter Soul’s weapon form in such a way that the blade part shrank and he generated wings on the head of the blade and they were able to fly.
Then, when Soul went mad in chapter 84, it was revealed that he has the ability to alter his scythe’s appearance even on his own. He was able to transform his blade sticking out of his arm into a keyboard and play music amplified by his soul wavelength to create sonic booms and influence the state of mind of his opponent through sound. This madness and sudden powerful ability was brought on by something called the black blood. The black blood is a supernatural and evil infection created by a witch, and early on in the series Soul was exposed to it. It influences his powers and amplifies them, but with the risk of falling completely into madness.
Outside of his combative abilities, Soul is able to play the piano extremely well, having come from a family of famous musicians. And though this ability began as a simple thing, he’s utilized it in combat, using music played in his soul to amplify the fighting ability of others when they resonate. However, he refuses to play the piano for just anyone.
Though he’s a living weapon, he’s not that powerful on his own. He has limited fighting ability and is more powerful when being used by a skilled fighter, namely his partner Maka. When they resonate their soul wavelengths together, they are able to be in tune with what each other is thinking and feeling and that helps to increase their fighting ability tenfold. He is also able to amplify her attacks in power, hence why a demon weapon is better than just any other weapon.
Personality: Soul is a very laid-back kind of guy. Or more specifically he acts laid-back because that is his idea of what a “cool” person acts like. However, if you put him in a situation that he hasn’t figured out exactly how to handle in a “cool” way yet, his more spastic and immature sides start to show. Such as being launched head first into Blaire’s bathtub while she is in it…naked, of course. Which results in nosebleeds and frantic stuttering.
Very little about Soul’s history has been revealed, so the roots of what made him the person he is today are hazy. It is obvious that Soul has a habit of hiding behind his cool persona, keeping a lot of his deeper emotions and thoughts hidden. After the battle with Crona and Ragnarok Soul says aloud to himself that like Crona, he has a fear of being close to others. It was in this moment that we got a very clear view both in his expression and in the very words he said of what drives him to be the way he is. Fear of closeness, of opening himself up to others is a part of why he’s so closed off emotionally and uses his cool mask as the sealed gate to his inner self.
Loyalty is another thing he deems as cool. In fact, it is something very high up there on his list. Cool or not, loyalty to the people he considers important to him is something he greatly values. Maka is the person we see his loyalty to the most, considering she is his partner, they definitely have a close relationship. He risked his life and took a sword to the chest to save her and trusts her with his life. His relationship with her is also very important to what kind of person he has developed into over the course of the series. While it is debatable whether she has his full trust, she is definitely the person he trusts the most out of most other characters we have been introduced to. The reason why it is debatable whether he trusts her completely is he simply has trouble opening up to her. For example, when he didn’t want to confide in her about his nightmares, and instead told Medusa. This was very interesting because it is another testament to how closed off Soul is to others that he would trust his very life to someone, but his emotions he cannot bring himself to expose. Rather, he would first trust his feelings and vulnerability to a complete stranger than his partner.
He also has a tendency to be very direct in what he says and does, another trait that he sees as “cool.” But more often than not it gets him in trouble both in battle with an enemy and with Maka. His directness is sometimes simply being foolish and not thinking things all the way through, such as when he jumped into Blaire’s window in the beginning of the series. But a lot of the time, especially in recent chapters, he’s just giving the facts or his opinion on something, “telling it like it is.” Other times, he’s also probably teasing someone, such as when he makes fun of Maka for her flat chest, lack of sex appeal and being a bookworm. All of these things are pretty true but his casual and blunt way of pointing them out are never meant to seriously hurt, but to poke fun.
Another trait that he has is a deeper insight into what’s going on around him and others. He has an ability to see situations and people for what and who they are. This is obvious when he, Maka and Crona meet Giriko who presents himself as a helpful local claiming to be able to show them where the rogue golem was located. While Maka and Crona were willing to take him at his word and follow him, Soul was very suspicious, and again displayed his direct nature by calling Giriko out on deceiving them more than once. Of course, Maka admonished him for being rude to Giriko, but in the end it turned out that Soul was right. This insight that he has is due to a natural mistrust on most other people and also having a kind of observant nature. Soul tends to sit back and let life happen while he acts cool and goes with it. From his position he’s almost looking at everything and everyone from the outside and is able to see the reality of things from his emotionally distanced standpoint.
Also, the demon in his head has deeply affected him ever since it first showed up like a little stowaway in the black blood train. These are not obvious changes, but it is pretty apparent that over time he has slowly become more emotionally secluded. Again, it is apart of his nature to internalize most things about himself and the kinds of emotions he feels about his situation with the black blood and the “little demon” seems to lead him to keep to himself a lot more. This is not to say that he is completely antisocial, but it’s certainly been a while since we’ve seen him get up to the same kind of shenanigans that he and Black*Star did when they first fought Kid together. He still enjoys the company of his friends and he can still have a laugh… but for a while there he looked more tired and a little older since taking that black blade to the chest. However, ever since becoming a death scythe he seems to have become a little more like his “old self.” But exactly why he has seemed to get better since then is not clear, it could be the change to death scythe, or it could be nothing, or something else entirely.
Soul also has an inferiority complex possibly born from living in his older brother’s shadow primarily when it comes to music. A lot of things about his relationship with Wes are unknown, but for the most part it seems that there is a lot of insecurity there on Soul’s end… but he also loves and admires his brother all the same. How strong his insecurities are can be seen in how he refuses to play the piano for anyone unless he must. While this insecurity began in his musical ability, it also seems to carry over to other things, such as his abilities as a weapon. When he met the death scythe named Justin Law and found out that Justin had reached death scythe status at a young age and without the help from a meister he seemed very disturbed by this fact and questioned himself, but the window into his thoughts and feelings at that time as always was brief. Being a weapon is one thing his brother can’t ever be, so it has become a large part of his identity in the way he presents himself to others and how he feels about himself. He is proud of it. So it is important to him to be the best weapon he can be.
